15+ Small Home Gym Ideas to Maximize Your Space (and Workouts!)

This small home gym ideas guide is NOT sponsored and was written based on my honest experience as a busy mom working on her fitness!

Finding the time and energy for workouts between homeschooling, work, kids’ activities, cooking, and managing your household can feel impossible sometimes, right? But creating a small home gym area within your household can be an absolute game-changer – I know it helped me and I hope that these tips will help you too!

Here’s what my little fitness corner in the bedroom looked like before we moved it downstairs.

Instead of worrying about childcare or driving to a gym (and getting 30 or more minutes of your life back!), you can get of bed, finish up lessons with the kids, or even jump straight into your exercise routine between work calls.

Your home gym really doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive – just fill it with the things you already enjoy doing and some motivation to get started. I promise, building a space that keeps you motivated and fits your lifestyle will make all the difference.

So today, I’ll share some of my favorite home gym ideas – from small space hacks to affordable equipment and decor touches that will make you actually want to work out, especially at home!

Biggest Benefits of a Home Gym

There are a ton of benefits that come with having a home gym.

Save Your Time

For me, the most valuable one is time. I’ve never liked the idea of having to drive back and forth to a gym or relying on others for child care so commuting to the gym just wasn’t an option for us.

I can think of too many other things that I could be doing with that 30 minutes spent commuting!

Save Your Money

The second biggest benefit is saving money.

Gym memberships are expensive! The one closest to our home costs $80 a month.

Instead of spending $80 a month on gym fees, you could invest in a high quality piece of equipment like a spin bike (I have this one) or a treadmill (I tried this one before I went back to the bike) for your cardio and a couple of sets of dumbbells for weight training! It really is all you need to get going.

Make It Kid-Friendly

If you have young children like we do, a home gym can be a nice way to include them and even encourage healthy habits at this age too.

You could even add equipment for kids like a balance beam, small trampoline, or other kids’ exercise equipment.

Customize Your Experience

Choose your own music and play it at the volume you like – or don’t play any music at all.

Workout with the equipment you want to for as long as you want!

Small Home Gym Ideas

Not everyone has a big basement or garage to dedicate to fitness – we sure don’t!

Here are some ways to work with the space that you do have.

The Corner Nook

Store resistance bands and adjustable dumbbells neatly in a designated fitness cart like this one or even a large clear bin or basket.

Using vertical space makes a huge different when working with small areas.

A set of adjustable dumbbells will also save a ton of space compared to a rack full of weights – in spots like this, multi-use equipment is your best friend!

You can also use a pegboard to hang your workout shoes, yoga mat, bolsters, bike tray, and more, like we do.

Closet Gym

A foldable weight bench (my parents have this one) and wall hooks for gear make this totally doable.

Our Basement Setup

Add a large mirror, stationary bike or treadmill, exercise mat, and dumbbells to your basement to create a designated workout area.

If you have a small wall space to dedicate to storing your weight set, you could also consider adding a tiered weight rack like ours.

I have mine downstairs next to our dryer since my workout space is in our laundry room.

Best Gym Equipment Options for Small Spaces

Here are a few recommendations based on my own personal experiences as well as that of a few family members.

Stationary Bike

I personally can’t recommend the Schwinn IC4 enough.

I’ve enjoyed working out on these since I was a teenager and it’s still my go to for cardio in my 30’s.

After saying goodbye to my Peloton, I took more than a year off from stationary bike workouts but found that I need structured exercise in my life to maintain my fitness goals and stay motivated.

This bike is solid and I can use it with any fitness app I want to – it has a stand for an iPad or iPhone in case you want to use the JRNY or Peloton + apps, or even watch some exercise class videos on YouTube.

Make sure to get cycling shoes with SPD clips to clip in and out of your bike!

I use these clips and these shoes – the shoes are even available in half sizes and I found them true to size.

You could also get toe cages but you’ll feel more secure when you clip in, especially when you stand up during bike rides.

Elliptical

My parents are in their 60’s and both agree that this is their go to piece of exercise equipment.

When dad began to lose his mobility, he knew he needed to start moving again and would use their stationary bike (they have this one with no bells or whistles and honestly, it’s an amazing price for how solid it is) or the elliptical from time to time.

He says elliptical workouts are what made his hip pain disappear though!

Mom has always loved the elliptical and will do a treadmill walk from time to time too – she likes that this one folds down and under their bed.

Treadmill or Walking Pad

If you have the room for it, this is an amazing treadmill but it ate up to much of our gym space.

I ended up getting a walking pad to use with my standing desk in my office instead – sitting for too long makes me stiffen up and I loved the idea of standing and even moving while I work from home.

Here’s the treadmill I tried before going back to a spin bike (this is the most similar one out there now) – it was really affordable and cute but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as cycling.

Stepping Machine

My sister is also in her 30’s and swears by this thing!

She loves how small and compact it is and uses it in the evening after her kids go to sleep (I’m the opposite and workout first this in the morning).

So if a low priced quiet and small machine for after the kids go to bed is something you’re looking for, this might be an option to consider.

When dad was having trouble walking, I picked him up one of these so he could work on building the muscles in his legs while he watched tv.

It’s basically the sitting version of what my sister uses and I’d highly recommend it for other seniors in the same shape.

Creative Storage & Organization Hacks for Home Fitness

Keeping your home gym clutter-free makes it so much more inviting. A few smart storage solutions I love are:

  • Tiered racks for dumbbells – this is the one that we have.
  • Pegboards for resistance bands, yoga blocks, fitness monitors like this one (and chargers so you won’t lose them), sweat towels (these are just way too cute),
  • A rolling cart for yoga blocks, towels, resistance bands, and even your weight lifting runners or cycling shoes (I used to have one of these upstairs when I had a small fitness room)
  • A tall basket (I found that have a pretty one helped to to stay motivated to keep my space tidy) for mats and foam rollers.

Budget-Friendly Home Gym Ideas

Your home gym doesn’t have to drain your bank account to get you fit!

Instead, consider the following.

Shop Sales

Amazon has sales all the time and it can be worth buying different brands to save hundreds of dollars. We’ve found quite a few deals through Amazon Outlet as well – just be sure to always confirm the item’s condition before you buy (although you can return it if you’re unhappy with your purchase)!

Find Cheaper Alternatives

Make your own DIY weight racks using simple shelving like cube shelves.

Search Secondhand

Look for secondhand equipment on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist – personally, I like to save my expensive equipment purchases for somewhere I can get a warranty with them but I will pick up less expensive low risk things on Facebook

Choose Annual Plans for Maximum Savings

If you’re fully committed to your new fitness plan and would like the support of a fitness app, choose an annual plan to save more money.

Most apps will give you about 2 months free if you pay up front for the year.

You could also explore YouTube for free workout channels.

Pro Tip: Start small: even just a basic set of dumbbells and an exercise mat can take you a long way!

Motivational Home Gym Decor

A workout space that feels good is one you’ll actually use. Some simple upgrades:

  • Mirrors – they make your space look bigger and you can check your form with something like this. A full length mirror is best for checking your form (this is a really affordable and high quality option).
  • Motivational art – I have these inhale and exhale posters in my space. I also really like this metal sign and these personalized gym signs – I’m in the midst of updating my little basement corner and will post about that soon too.
  • Plants – greenery adds a calming vibe to any room. If your workout space is in a dark part of your home (or let’s be real, if you just forget to water your plants all the time), fake plants like this one and these small ones can add a really nice element to your space.
  • Fairy lights – consider battery powered string lights or even a cozy lamp like this instead of harsh overhead lights (we did the same thing in our guitar room with electric string lights and it’s such a nice chill vibe down there now). Getting away from harsh lights makes all the difference in setting the mood, especially if you workout first thing in the morning!

Tech & Extra Accessories to Level Up Your Home Gym

There are a few things I’ve added to my gym space for extra motivation and just to get through the workout on days where I’m not feeling like myself.

I really like this little Bluetooth speaker for working out and often use it with my phone to play guitar songs on Chordify too.

It sounds great especially for how small it is and the size is great for taking it all over the house and even into the backyard.

When I feel like working on my laptop, I’ll pop my spin tray onto my bike and set up my computer for research and/or listening to online courses.

I also like wearing a fitness tracker while I’m working out – this is the one I’ve been using to link my bike and phone.

If you want something that tracks your fitness all day long, you’ll probably prefer a smart watch like a Fitbit (this one is super affordable!) or an Apple Watch though.

Home Gym Ideas for Families

Encouraging healthy habits while the kids are young is so important to us. Here are a couple of the things we picked up for them.

Since the girls both do gymnastics, we picked up a balance beam, collapsible gymnastics bar, and thick exercise mat to use under the bar.

It honestly really made a difference with their performance in class and of course, when I workout during the day, they want to be downstairs working out too!

We create a little gymnastics circuit for them where the girls take turns with the beam, bar, and lift light weights.

They each have small kids exercise mats too – the girls love to copy what I do when I’m stretching and lifting weights (at this age, I wouldn’t give them anything heavier than 5 pounds though).

If you have the space for it, designated kids exercise equipment like this (my oldest is always asking when she’ll be able to use my bike too, haha) or even an exercise ball, or hoola hoops could be fun for the kids too.

Building a Home Gym You’ll Actually Use: Final Thoughts

Your home gym doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t even need its own room!

Just start with the basics and be intentional about the equipment you invest in.

Go for the equipment that fits your lifestyle and means, and most importantly, focus on the things that you think you’ll actually use! The ones you’ll enjoy enough to keep on coming back day after day.

Once you’ve done that, add in little touches that inspire you and make it a happy place – whether it’s an exercise mat in the living room, a full garage setup, or a walking pad under your bed, your home gym can be a place where you feel strong and motivated.

So grab a pair of dumbbells or hop on your bike and let’s make fitness part of your everyday life at home.

Happy exercising, friend!
